Woodland Q&A part 1

QUESTION: We are a builder trying to integrate sustainable construction practices. We wanted to know if concrete is a sustainable construction (“green”) material? What are the definitions of sustainable development and sustainable construction materials?

ANSWER: Woodland Supply in Philadelphia is responding to the growing demand for sustainable or "Green" building materials and techniques. At Woodland Supply "sustainable development" is construction that meets the needs of the present without compromising the resources of future generations. This kind of development means the selection and careful application of materials that minimize the social, environmental, and economic impact of development.

By this standard "Sustainable construction materials" are defined as materials that support sustainable development and are environmentally friendly. Sustainable construction materials have the following characteristics:

-Being long durable and long-lasting
-Capable of being produced locally or regionally to minimize transportation needs
-Having some recycled materials content
-Produced with little or no pollution or itself polluting
-Requiring a minimum amount of energy to produce
-Capable of being reused on projects
-The original source material being rapidly renewable
-Materials used in an innovative way to mitigate social, environmental, and economic impacts
